But, what if?
So we were liberated by the Allies, but what if the war didn't end? What if the Allies were defeated by the Germans? What if the Canadians and the Americans decided not to interfere?

What would have happened if Germany had won WWII?
Too many variables to make an accurate prediction. A very enjoyable novel was written in this alternate universe. Fatherland by Robert Harris. A worthy read.
I shudder to think, really. The death toll would have been -- to say the least -- horrific on a scale that would have made the actual World War II look like an ABC Afterschool Special. The map of Europe would likely look very different and something along the lines of this: I posit that there would've been a Cold War, but with Germany as the adversary. I cannot imagine how a Nazi victory would have saved the Japanese. And eventually the German army would have run out of steam and had to stop at the Urals (in the highly unlikely event of a Soviet collapse). Germany would not have spared her Slavic, Turkic or Magyar neighbors, even those who helped her. Hungary was too close to home to allow to survive. Romania and Bulgaria were in southern areas Germany wanted. Their populations would have been displaced or exterminated. I cannot imagine Nazi hubris would have stopped after beating the USSR. They would have taken all of the Balkan Peninsula, thrown Italy some scraps and absorbed the rest. France would have had chunks removed and handed to Spain and Italy. Britain may well have survived free of Nazi occupation due to her heavy American/Canadian presence, but that would have been the only free place in Europe. I refuse to believe Switzerland would have been spared or Sweden, despite being neutral. They had too many Germanic people that Hitler wanted "returned to the fold". By my quick mental calculations, over 200 million people would have been exterminated either in death camps or through forced sterilization. The entire map would be different and we may well have never learned of the industrial extermination of humans until decades later. It would have been horrific. |
